Andina PLC and 600+ companies call on G20 leaders to strengthen their national climate plans

October, 1 2021. LONDON. ANDINA PLC is among 600+ companies that have signed an Open Letter calling from urgent action from G20 Leaders in response to the climate crisis.

On the occasion of the pivotal G20 and COP26 summits and following the UN’s ‘code red for humanity’ warning, the We Mean Business coalition of companies releases an open letter urging G20 to go all in to at least halve emissions by 2030 – in line with limiting global temperature rise to 1.5ºC.

Climate change is the biggest threat to security that modern humans have ever faced and devastating consequences of global warming are noticed in all regions of the world.  Governments need to increase their National commitments for 2030 and 2050, and deliver detailed plans and policy measures for their implementation. The G20 countries represent approximately 90% of global GDP and almost 80% of global trade and greenhouse gas emissions. This implies that Leadership from the G20 on climate is critical.

The open letter, from companies spanning sectors from energy to transport and fashion to construction, highlights three key measures:

  • Strengthen national climate plans (Nationally Determined Contributions) in line with at least halving global emissions by 2030 and committing to achieve net-zero emissions no later than 2050.
  • Commit to ending new coal power development and financing immediately and develop plans to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2030 for advanced economies, and 2040 for other countries
  • Align public finance, COVID-19 recovery spending and fiscal policies with a 1.5°C trajectory, while ensuring adequate support for adaptation and resilience measures.

It also include actions such as the reconfiguration of the global financial framework  by removing fossil fuel subsidies by 2025, putting a meaningful price on carbon and supporting clean technology investments and innovation; quicker adoption of renewable power and electric vehicles as well as electrification.

At ANDINA PLC we are aware of the urgency of accelerated action to go further and faster towards reaching our own emissions reduction goals. The right policy decisions taken today can drive further investments and spur business decisions in favor of climate solutions across G20 countries. The G20 Leaders’ Summit is a unique opportunity for policymakers to increase their climate ambition and unlock policy barriers for companies to accelerate their climate action.

We Mean Business Coalition is calling for bold climate leadership at COP26, is the time for all countries to demonstrate climate ambition in line with a 1.5ºC trajectory and halving global emissions by 2030. Business needs clear, ambitious policies to go further and faster.
